Program builds better bones

RSVP Bone Builders is seeking people 55 and over to teach exercise classes designed to help prevent or alleviate osteoporosis. Free training will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tues., July 18 in Oxnard.

The exercise program helps seniors maintain balance, increase strength and stay independent.

An additional instructor is especially needed for a new Ventura class which is forming this month. This person will support the lead instructor.

The training involves visiting two of the 30 Bone Builders classes in the West County, attending a six-hour classroom training session and working with established instructors at three more classes.

No experience is necessary. Instructors must be 55 or older, enjoy working with people and be willing to make a six-month teaching commitment.

Instructors teach in pairs. During classes, seniors do balance exercises and lift light weights.

RSVP Bone Builders offers 30 free classes in Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Camarillo and Ventura. For more information, go to www.oxnardrec.org and follow the Senior Services link.
